 Welcome to the last Accordion USA News publication of 2023. In 2024 you will see an expanded version of the news with even more articles, videos, stories, and information. Our newest feature is the enlarging of photos in articles. Click on the indicated photos and you will see a larger clear photo. Please consider this year, more than ever, helping to support our accordion colleagues by purchasing holiday gifts from their online websites. Not only will you be giving a unique musical gift, but, at the same time, you will be helping to support them during these difficult times. In this publication, you will read many articles and you will think of gift ideas. I thank you in advance for your consideration of the people who bring music, light, joy, and positivity to all of us. Check out the various articles with gift ideas for your favorite accordion lover. It is amazing to me that with this publication, I have completed FIFTEEN fabulous, exciting and fulfilling years as National Editor! Over the years I have produced 240 publications and over 4,800 articles! Time flies when you are having fun, as the saying goes. And as the years goes by, I enjoy my position even more. I feel it is both a great honor and huge responsibility to serve as National Editor of www.accordionusa.com sharing with readers all types of information about the accordion. I also appreciate the many people who have contributed ideas and articles to the news. I have been very fortunate to work with the AWW Editor and Founder, the amazing Harley Jones ! Where in the world is he? Always traveling and participating in accordion events all over the globe but never too busy to assist and guide me with publication questions. I have learned so much from him and continue to learn from him. I also want to thank former National Editor Kevin Friedrich for his encouragement and continuing support. Most importantly I want to thank YOU, the readers, for helping www.accordionusa.com to become one of the most popular accordion sites (along with the other AWW publications) on this planet! In 2023, this USA News publication had almost 1 million page views! So we can surely conclude that there is a continuing and growing HUGE interest in the accordion! I would like to encourage you all to continue participation in the accordion world! What is the accordion world? You know what it is. It is a network, a special bonding, an instant friendship, a musical bonding, a sharing of feelings and ideas about the wonderful world of the accordion. As your National Editor, I enjoy presenting the accordion at all levels of accomplishment from beginner to professional. All are worthy of recognition for the great effort involved in learning the instrument. Additionally, the added great benefit is the wonderful people you can meet that ordinarily you would never encounter. The accordion unites us all bonding us with our love of music and the accordion. Please read the AWW publications especially the USA News. I welcome you all to continue sending me your ideas and comments. I like to present an eclectic, well rounded concept of what the accordion is all about. By reading the USA News, you will learn of events, concerts, festivals, performers on the North American continent. With our featured videos, you can actually hear and see the performers. Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season. The holidays are quickly approaching! So much shopping to do. But wait, the holidays are much more than frenzied buying sprees! It is time to think about others who are less fortunate. You can be generous with whatever musical talents you possess. What about sharing your holiday songs by playing for a senior center, hospital, or family gathering. And, if you are not yet comfortable with actually physically going to these places, you can still entertain on Skype, FaceTime, ZOOM or other social media sites. As those of us who have played for people already know… everyone enjoys music and marvels at HOW DO YOU DO THAT? on the accordion? The buttons, the keys, the bellows…. adults and children are always fascinated with the accordion. Playing the accordion is both pleasing to the ear and captivating to the eye. It is never boring! And never to late to learn to play! So, why not be brave and go out there and play whatever you know for someone who doesn't know the accordion! Get over your shyness and just go and play. I guarantee it will be rewarding. And…… since you are still going to go shopping anyway…….. please consider supporting the many accordion artists, composers, and writers…… who have created many wonderful musical gifts that you can consider giving as presents. They are inexpensive and you will be giving a gift that is entertaining, educational and, at the same time, supportive of our fellow musicians.  The 2024 ATG Festival is honoring Joan C. Sommers and celebrating her 90th birthday in Kansas City MI, July 23 - 27, 2024. There are a number of special events including the ATG Festival Orchestra directed by Joan C. Sommers playing new music by Gorka Hermosa and Ian Watson, the UMKC Community Accordion Orchestra directed by Joan C. Sommers. A superb array of international level performers including: (alphabetical order) Bridge and Wolak (Canada), Das Duo Kollektiv (Austria), Gorka Hermosa (Spain) Grayson Masefield (New Zealand), Mirco Patarini (CIA President - Italy), Stas Venglevski (USA) and others. 2024 ATG International World Cup Accordion Competition ATG is also pleased to announce a special competition offering a $5,000 first prize and $3,000 second prize for our 2024 Festival in Kanas City, Missouri celebrating Joan Sommers’ 90th year. Details for entry and performance are below: 1. Entrant may be of any nationality. 2. Copy of Passport must be shown on Entry Blank. 3. There is an Entry Fee of US $75. 4. A photo of the Entrant must be sent with the Entry Fee. 5. All entries must be received by ATG no later than June 1, 2024. 6. Anyone needing a Visa should contact ATG as early as possible but no later than February 1. Anyone needing a Visa is urged to apply as quickly as possible. 7. Any costs incurred by entrant to obtain the Visa must be paid by the entrant. 8. 2 awards: First Place ……..US $5,000. Second Place …. US $3,000. 1. The competition will be held in One Round. Entrants must draw for playing position on Thursday afternoon and may not change the position. If the entrant is not at the drawing, someone will draw for them. 2. Entrants must present themselves as artists to an audience; presentation, dress and stagecraft all being important. 3. Entrants are to play an own choice program of at least 23 minutes minimum with 25 minutes as absolute maximum time allowed. 4. The own choice program must consist of a minimum of 5 pieces. 5. The program must have pieces which demonstrate different styles and moods. 6. The program must be primarily classical with one piece that would be considered Entertainment. 7. Movements from longer pieces (Suites, Sonatas, Theme & Variations) are acceptable. 8. At least two (2) of the pieces must be originally composed for the accordion. 9. The program must show proficiency in the use of both free bass and stradella bass. Some pieces might use all free bass while others might use all stradella or a combination of both. 1. All pieces must be performed by memory. 2. One copy of each piece must be submitted with the Entry Form. This may be a PDF copy or a physical copy. If a piece is new and not published, it will be secure within the ATG contest committee and will not be distributed to anyone else. 3. There will be a panel of several adjudicators. 4. Scoring will be based on 25 points for the highest grade. One of the highest grades and one of the lowest grades will be omitted for the final number of points earned. 5.  The non-profit Innovative Accordion Music Productions ( IAMP) launched a new accordion project in late 2023. The purpose of the project is to increase the number of accordionists of all ages via direct instruction on 12 bass or 48 bass piano accordion. The project is called The Mobile Accordion ClassRoom (MACr), as it will travel to different schools, educational venues, workshops and more to bring a classroom directly to the public with on-site, hands-on music instruction for beginners of all ages. Currently IAMP is in Phase I, which is instrument acquisition through donations made to IAMP. We currently have several instruments but need more to complete the MACr. Our goal is to assist accordion students to make connections with the past through the legacy of culturally diverse music heritages. Lessons are inspired by Texan cultures and but not limited in genre or generation. We are particularly interested in offering programs to schools, where keyboard instruction is universal.  It is the time of year, once again, when my mind goes to holiday music, magical light displays, celebrations with loved ones, and to my all-time favorite movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”. I have watched this heartwarming movie every Christmas season for the last 50 years. The message conveyed in this film is one that each of us should hear often: None of us is a failure if we have helped others, even in a small way. The star of this movie, Jimmy Stewart, has always been my favorite actor. Wholesome and warmly “real”, Stewart could so convincingly bring his characters to life. It’s a Wonderful Life, produced and directed by Frank Capra in 1946, was one of three Capra films that starred Jimmy Stewart. Capra felt that Stewart was perfect to project a message of an ideal America. The two men became close friends. I soon discovered that they had something else in common: they both played and loved the accordion. Given an accordion at the age of 6, Jimmy Stewart fell in love with this instrument and it remained a beloved part of his life until his death. In 1938, Stewart was chosen to do a photo shoot for a cover of the new periodical, the “Accordion World Magazine”. The photos were mesmerizing with incredible shadows of his accordion’s bellows. Although Jimmy Stewart’s celebrated film career spanned 80 films and he was a Brigadier General in the Army Air Force during WWII (1941-1947), it was the accordion that meant the most to him in the end. Stewart chose one of the photos taken for the Accordion World Magazine in 1938 to be used when he passed away. Jimmy Stewart died in 1997 at the age of 89. I strongly suggest watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” this holiday season. In the last few moments of the film, Police Officer Bert (Ward Bond) comes in playing “Auld Lang Syne” on a beautiful old accordion. Happy Holidays, Everyone!! During that time, I befriended and came to respect many of America's accordion icons - the men and women who devoted their lives to a somewhat misunderstood musical instrument. “An American Accordion Story” chronicles the history of the accordion in the Unites States. It honors the pioneers and legendary artists who transformed the accordion from an instrument associated with the folklore of European immigrants into an increasingly popular formal instrument found in concert halls, jazz clubs, and on all levels of society. Yet, the heart of this book is about my family and the Petosa legacy - it's one-hundred years of experience, knowledge, and values. We are honored to share this story with loyal costumers, friends, and family, including our current fifth generation and generations to come. My grandfather, Carlo Petosa, who passed away a year before I was born, brought a humble accordion with him when he immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1906 and founded Petosa Accordions in 1922. Q: What inspired you to write a book? Originally, the intentions were to create something special to share with family and close friends as a small passion project; after establishing the basis of the book, it was apparent that there was a wider thirst for a niche, generational perspective. All things considered, the concept evolved beyond its original intentions into a project that reflects our company's constant aim; to create something that endures generations, however painstaking the process is to conceive it. Q: There are over 380 photos inside the book spanning the last 100 years of accordion history, was there a particular photo that stands out as your favorite? A: We sent nearly 1000 photos to our publisher and graphic designer. My idea was to make this of interest to accordionists but also attractive to music lovers and the general public. We asked the design team to choose photos that non-accordionist would find most attractive and informative to the general public and their interests. There are so many photos that in themselves tell a story, but I think for me the front and back cover tell the story of how contemporary and fun the accordion is. Q: What was it like sifting through so much history? A: I was so fortunate that my father retained all these photos. During my fathers retirement he found it therapeutic to arrange thousands of photos, newspaper clippings, artists information etc in 3" binder albums. My guess is I spent 100+ hours going through these binders scanning and editing the photos to archive. Although a lot of work, I also found it therapeutic in a way. I have a lot of great memories of meeting most of these artists. Q: If you could describe the 4 generations of Petosa's, including yourself, using only one word what would it be? A: Carlo Petosa:Pioneer Joe Petosa Senior: Nobleman Yourself: Scrupulous Joey Jr.: Visionary Q: What do Anthony Galla-Rini, Dick Contino, Art Van Damme, Peitro Diero, Clifton Chenier all have in common? A: These iconic artists gifted virtuosity to the world and not only popularized and improved their music genre in the process, but inevitably revolutionized many aspects using their preferred tool: accordion. Q: After the accordions "fall from grace" in the 70's, how was Petosa Accordions able to survive the steep decline in the accordion market? A: My father always kept our company financially healthy, having no debt to service. In the early 70's we diversified our offerings and added sales and service of other musical instruments such as PA's, guitars, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer keyboards etc. My father continued the strive for perfection in our accordions, knowing no matter the industry or state of the economy, there will always be demand for the highest quality. Q: What do you love most about the accordion? A: I truly believe the accordion is, unequivocally, the most versatile musical instrument in the world. It wasn't just a coincidence that it was one of the most popular instruments for a half century, and now an entirely new generation is discovering this all over again. Q: What do you see for the future of the instrument? Innovations in designs? Is there a changing market? Change in demand? A: As my father predicted 40 years ago, there has been a resurgence in popularity of the accordion over the past decade +. Instrument trends follow music, and music taste is constantly evolving. We find ourselves continually evolving the aesthetics of our instruments and most importantly, we are invariably improving on quality and construction as the science of our craft advances. The one aspect of our business that my father could not possibly have predicted has been the most pleasant surprise of this century; the ability to offer our products to the entire world via the internet.  Lauren shares, “I am pleased to present my new luxury-edition book, the transcription series to accompany the 4-CD collection "Outsinging the Nightingale-Lost Treasures of Bulgarian Music" Detailed transcriptions, with ornamentation, of instrumental tunes, and song texts with translations of all 25 tracks from CD A of my 4-CD Collection of Bulgarian folk music "Outsinging the Nightingale-Lost Treasures of Bulgarian Music” Limited edition, 72 pages, spiral-bound, luxurious, thick and durable card stock paper.”Lauren Brody was born in New York City, and has been involved with music since early childhood. A classically trained pianist, she received a B.A. in music from the City University of New York, and pursued a Master's Degree in Music before changing course to devote herself to the restoration and tuning of pianos. She first became aware of Bulgarian music as a teenager, and was so deeply impressed with what she heard that, in 1969, she made her solo first trip to Bulgaria. That initial trip sparked a life-long interest and commitment to the music and the culture, despite the fact that Lauren has no Bulgarian ancestry. In 1971, during the Communist era in Bulgaria, when visitors from the West were not welcome in the region, it is remarkable that she received a stipend from the Bulgarian government to do post-graduate study in Bulgarian folk music at the State Music Conservatory in Sofia. It was during this period that she was first introduced to old 78rpm recordings of Bulgarian folk music. These recordings were to become a subject of great future interest for Lauren. In 1990, she received a grant from the Fulbright Foundation to research the commercial recording industry in Bulgaria from 1900-1950. It was the the pioneer study on the subject, as most Bulgarian scholarship in the field of ethnomusicology was devoted to field research. The notion that commercial recordings were a valid avenue of inquiry did not have much traction among Bulgarian scholars at the time. Despite this scepticism, colleagues at the Institute of Music in Sofia were quite helpful to Lauren in the pursuit of her research goals. In addition to her research activities, Lauren has been an active performer and teacher of Bulgarian folk music and singing. She appears on two CDs as vocalist and keyboard player with the Yuri Yunakov Ensemble, and has been teaching at seminars since the early 1970s. She leads a dual life as a klezmer musician, and has been a member of Kapelye and Mikveh, with whom she has appeared in films, recorded and toured extensively through the U.S., Canada and Europe.  The Dargaville Museum is proud to present 'Making Spirits Bright' Christmas afternoon of music with New Zealand born New York accordionist Kevin Friedrich and his "Kiwi" Friends. The concert will be held on December 3rd, 2023 at 1:00 PM.This popular event brings together the community to share an afternoon of music and friendship with a variety show of local and guest artists. The Dargaville Museum houses ‘Accordion Gems, A Master Collection of Accordions through Time’ curated by Kevin Friedrich. The collection features a magnificent array of accordions spanning it’s almost 200 year history. Select instruments from the collection are used in the concert presentations.   The highly acclaimed Russian-born composer and naturalized American citizen Alexander Tcherepnin (picture right) 1899-1977) accepted three solo commissions from AAA Composers Commissioning Committee Chair Elsie M. Bennett in 1960 (Partita), 1965 (Invention), and 1967 (Tzigane). Invention is a highly chromatic and contrapuntal piece in several contrasting sections that works very well on either the stradella or free-bass accordion. Tzigane is a folk-like offering that divides into two dramatic sections, Sostenuto and Animoto. The composer described it as being made up of synthetic “folk themes” of his own creation cast in the “Romanian gypsy character.” Both are very clever and entertaining little gems, well worth hearing and performing. I wrote two articles on them for the annual AAA Festival Journal printings in 2003 (Partita) and 2014 (Invention and Tzigane). I have now expanded and updated both articles, and the 2014 one has just been converted this month into html format for easier reading. Massachusetts Conductor and His Unique, Versatile Orchestraby Marissa Falcetti |
 Where can a lover of music witness a musical ensemble consisting entirely of accordions, accompanied by two vocalists, a drummer, and guitarist that combines the sounds of nearly every instrument and a song list from nearly every genre on the planet into a single concert?The answer is in a concert performance of the New England Digital Accordion Orchestra, which has its roots in Western Massachusetts. The orchestra is the first of its kind in the United States and unique throughout the world, according to founder and conductor Anselmo "Sam" Falcetti, of Wilbraham, Massachusetts. "Close your eyes and you won't imagine that you are listening to a group consisting mostly of accordions," says Falcetti. The group uses Roland V digital accordions. According to Falcetti, the instrument, which dates to 2004, "has been aptly described as 'an orchestra in a box,' and each accordion can perform the sound of multiple instruments playing at one time with tone and expression." The orchestra's repertoire ranges from Broadway show and Hollywood film tunes to country and rock n' roll, and from Dixieland to polka classics. Formed in 2015 by Falcetti, whose family founded and still runs the Falcetti Music stores, the orchestra currently features performers representing five of the six New England states. The group has performed at the Eastern States Exposition and other regional fairs as well as appeared as an opening act for Deanna Martin and Bobby Rydell at the Italian Festival in Enfield. The orchestra is currently preparing to perform at First Night Chatham, which features 70 entertainment acts from around the country, on New Year’s Eve in Chatham, Massachusetts. The accordion orchestra first performed at First Night Chatham in 2019, and was welcomed back again last December. It was invited back by popular demand for 2020 and 2021, but COVID led to the cancellation of the indoor event activities both years.  Music teacher Linda Holcomb shares, “At Public-School 203Q in Bayside, Queens, the students think the accordion is cool! Ever since Cory Pesaturo visited our school, everyone wants to be in the Accordion Club! It was a very special treat for our school, and he made the accordion seem so cool to play! Thanks to the generosity of several people who have donated accordions to our school, we now have the largest accordion club in P.S. 203’s history! We are proud of our eighteen members this year.”There are so many students who want to be in the accordion club that she has a waiting list. The group is conducted by the school’s music teacher, Linda Holcomb, with the assistance of community member and professional accordionist, Papa Joe DeClemente. Linda said, "We enjoy performing for concerts and events in our school, and we love taking our show on the road, into our community. During December, the group will play holiday songs at several locations. The students always come home from those trips so excited, having experienced how their music can really be a blessing to others." The school’s Winter Concert will be held on December 17, 2023 at 7:PM. The accordions will be playing their rousing renditions of “Jingle Bells”, “Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel”, and maybe even a little “Silver Bells”. The nine and ten year olds from Bayside, Queens, who make up “The Squeeze Box 18” are excitedly preparing for their holiday concerts! Their director, Linda Holcomb, is elated that this is the largest group the Oakland Gardens School (PS 203) has ever had! Linda shares, “We have 18 accordionists this year! It’s all thanks to “Papa Joe” DeClemente, who has looked tirelessly for 12 bass accordions for us. In the past, we were lucky to have 12 working accordions, but this year, I am delighted that we are able to give 18 students the opportunity to learn this wonderful instrument!” “Papa Joe” DeClemente volunteers once a week early in the morning to assist the music teacher, Linda Holcomb, at the elementary school music program at Public-school 203Q, in Bayside, Queens which may be one of the only elementary schools in the five boroughs of New York City that has a student accordion band. The school started their accordion band fifteen years ago. They meet once a week, at the beginning of the school day to practice various songs that they will perform throughout the year. “Papa Joe” volunteers his Monday mornings to help Mrs. Holcomb with the accordion club. “He is a huge asset to our program!”, remarks Holcomb. “The children love him, and so far, he’s been able to fix just about anything that a 9 year-old can break on an accordion!” “The Squeeze Box 18” will be performing at the following holiday events: * Sunday, Dec. 10th at 5:00 PM at the Bayside Hills Civic Association Outdoor Holiday Lighting Celebration on Bell Blvd & the 53rd Ave Mall in Bayside, Queens. * Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 7:00 PM at the Oakland Gardens School Winter Concert, 53-11 Springfield Blvd, Bayside, NY.  Betty Jo Simon is a friendly and talented accordionist and is very modest about her talents. She loves to perform and promote the accordion. Even her adorable grandsons play the accordion! She is a perfect example of how the accordion enriches not only the performer’s life but also that of all the people who connect with her enthusiasm and love of the instrument!Did you know that Betty Jo Simon was honored at the 2023 ATG Festival and inducted into their Hall of Fame? Betty Jo shares, “On July 19-23, 2023 we had most enjoyable days participating and performing at the Accordionists & Teachers Guild (ATG) 81st Annual Festival. It’s always a joy to visit with accordion friends from the U.S. and around the world. I enjoyed playing with the acclaimed UMKC Community Accordion Ensemble, on the Original Music concert as a trio with Lemi Wang and Jane Christison, and in the ATG Festival Orchestra. A lot of time and effort by everyone produced a wonderful variety of performances at Wheaton College's Armerding Concert Hall. At the last evening's Gala Banquet, I had a big surprise. The ATG board awarded me with a plaque that acknowledged the various assignments I had completed over many years and my dedication to the accordion world. With this plaque, they inducted me into the “ATG International Accordion Hall of Fame.” I humbly thanked the board members for this honorary award. It was a special memorial conclusion to another wonderful ATG festival.” And now it’s that time of year! Betty Jo Simon brings endless enthusiasm to the stage for any occasion. A vivacious performer who enjoys intimate concert settings where she can talk with her audience, Betty Jo has a wide repertoire from which to choose. Her favorite? "Around the World with the MIDI Accordion." She enjoys performing classical music the most, but she loves the schmaltzy stuff too and still likes to play as a strolling musician. Her musical aptitude and love for the accordion appeared early. As a high school student, she became the first accordionist to win the instrumental division of the Youth Talent Auditions of the Topeka Civic Symphony. Betty Jo earned a Bachelor of Music in Accordion Performance from the University of Missouri--Kansas City (UMKC), where she played the world premiere of Paul Creston's “Fantasy for Accordion and Orchestra” with the UMKC Civic Orchestra. She participated in USO tours to Greenland, Newfoundland, Labrador and Germany, and did a two-year stint with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. Betty Jo now performs as a soloist throughout the United States and internationally. In 2000 she appeared on a Chinese satellite TV musical variety program aired on Chinese New Year and went on to give concerts in Beijing and Shanghai. In 2007 she won the Maddalena Belfiore Entertainment Competition for Female Accordionist and currently leads a German polka band called The Alpen Spielers. In August 2009 she performed as soloist with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra at three different venues, one being the opening concert of the 64th Annual Coupe Mondiale (World Championship Accordion Competition). |

With his guidance, Bonnie developed excellent technique, music reading skills, performing skills, and the appreciation of practice and patience. She was a consistent winner at the Washington Accordion Teachers competitions culminating in a trip to New York for an International competition and a performance in Carnegie Hall. While attending the University of Washington, Bonnie discovered the budding field of computers and decided on a career as a Computer Systems Programmer specializing in large mainframe operating systems. After obtaining her degree in Mathematics, Bonnie worked for companies such as Bank of America, Seafirst Bank, Computer Sciences Corp., Control Data Corp., Scientific Data Systems, and Ames Research Center. Currently, Bonnie is retired from the computer field and is a full time musician. This includes performing in many diverse situations and performing with many other skilled musicians. It also includes studying. Bonnie is concentrating on jazz studies and has studied with highly reputable artists such as David Friesen, Marc Seales, Doug Miller, Randy Halberstadt, Fred Hoadley, and Marc Fendell. She also studied with respected accordionist Ken Olendorf. Bonnie is continually attending classes and workshops to broaden her musical skills. She has a strong desire to see the accordion take it's deserved position of respect amongst other well-established instruments. The evening will feature Maestro Lache Cercel with his Roma Jazz Ensemble with musical direction by Don Ogilvie, accordionists Bob Kozak and Ben Meti, dancers of Parno Drom Roma (Gypsy) group and special guest vocalist Laura Crema. It will be a night of high energy Roma Jazz, dancing and Balkan Rhythms to close out this fantastic year at Tyrant! This will be their final show of 2023. Originally from Bucharest, Lache created the musical genre Roma jazz by merging Eastern influences with western musicology. In celebration of his multi-cultural influence in music, this unique collaboration features a selection of highly regarded musicians, singers and dancers. Cercel is a bandleader who lets every musician shine. He plays with the outrageous virtuosity found in contemporary European Roma recordings, and adds his own vision, relaxing the form somewhat. The musicians play with freedom and the listener feels the strong roots and hears the history of tragedy, struggle and ultimate survival that is part of Roma music. Mr. Del Curto has appeared on recordings with such artists as Osvaldo Pugliese, Astor Piazzolla, Paquito D'Rivera, Tito Puente, and Plácido Domingo. As part of the Pablo Ziegler Trio, he received a 2018 Grammy award for Jazz Tango. Dedicated to the education, outreach, and the preservation of tango, Mr. Del Curto co-founded the Stowe Tango Music Festival in 2014, and continues to serve as its artistic director. The premier tango music festival in the United States, it draws the most talented tango musicians and dancers, as well as fans, from all over the globe. | Innovative Accordion Music Productions (IAMP), a Texas-based non-profit, is proud to sponsor a Winter Accordion Wonderland concert by renowned accordionists Sergei and Maria Teleshev and by Elena Fainshtein. Also performing will be the Fainshtein Accordion Ensemble, comprised of students enrolled in Elena’s accordion school, Musical Expressions, as well as guest performanc by Martina Li. You are invited to an afternoon of fabulous entertainment with music from around the world presented by these talented musicians. The Winter Accordion Wonderland will be held at on Saturday, January 27, 2024 3:30 - 5:15 PM Central Time Kawai Piano Gallery, 601 W. Plano Parkway #153, Plano, Texas. Ticket sales will begin on November 15, 2023. Advance Tickets: $25 for adults. Age 18 and under are free. Tickets at the Door: $30. The family duo Sergei and Maria Teleshev, “Two Accordions”, is a unique collaboration between father and daughter, both renowned musicians and accordion champions from the United States. Sergei Teleshev is a professional accordion player from Eugene, Oregon living and performing in the United States since 1996. He has Ukrainian roots and was classically trained at the Academy of Music in Voronezh, Russia. Sergei has won many regional and international accordion competitions and has collaborated with many internationally recognized artists, ensembles, and orchestras, as well as composing and arranging music and participating in recording projects of different genres. Sergei provides online accordion lessons, master classes, and educational school programs for all ages. Maria Telesheva was six years old when she started to play the accordion taught by her father Sergei Teleshev. Two months after Maria started playing, she won her first International Competition. Since then, she has won Accordion and Vocal International Competitions in the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy, Belarus, and Ukraine. Maria’s talent is not limited to her exceptional duet and solo accordion performances, as she is also a talented singer. Elena Fainshtein is an energetic driving force in the accordion world as a master performer, conductor, and teacher. She started playing the bayan at age 5 and attended a school for gifted children in Minsk, Belarus. At age 15 she was accepted to the Music College in Minsk and graduated with highest honors, then attended the Belarusian State Academy of Music. She performed many concerts with her husband Gregory as they traveled to Russia, Georgia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Germany, Israel, and the United States. Elena has performed at the National Accordion Conventions (NAA) in Dallas, the Las Vegas International Festivals, and the Accordionists and Teachers Guild (ATG) Conventions. She has worked collaboratively with numerous musicians and presented many workshops throughout her career. Last summer Elena performed in Salt Lake City at the International Trombone Festival, and then at the ATG Festival in Lisle, Illinois with trombonist Dr. Lucas Kaspar, Professor of Music at Cameron University. She has been teaching piano and accordion for over 30 years. Elena resides in Plano, Texas where she maintains a private home studio called Musical Expressions and has been working with the Fainshtein Accordion Ensemble for many years.  The online accordion studio of Dallas Vietty will be resuming lessons and group classes starting Jan 2024. After a nearly four-month break from performing and teaching due to a sudden family emergency, Dallas is excited and enthusiastic about returning to work.
"I am excited to offer my popular One-on-One accordion lessons online. I'll also be offering fantastic group class offerings which I was planning to offer this past fall, but I had to postpone," says Dallas. Slow Blues Accordion: Two levels: beginner and experienced This 60-minute class, curated for passionate accordionists, aims to connect you to the essence of the blues through your accordion, and especially your rhythmic self. Accordion Yoga: For All levels of accordionist. A 50-minute class designed to bring presentness and relaxed strength to our movement and sound. Moving slow, watching our bodies, letting unneeded tensions drop away. Technique centered on relaxation. No actual yoga poses or movements. Dallas shares, “Music is my love. For me the accordion isn't just an instrument to me — it's a lifestyle, a passion, and a lifelong friend. My relationship to music is as fundamental to my life, as all of my most important relationships with people. I started my musical life as a pianist, but as my skills on accordion grew soon I knew I had found an inexpressible beauty that I wanted to explore for the rest of my life. From the bustling streets of my local bars and restaurants, to music festivals and bigger stages of concert halls, I've spent my life pursuing music and this wonderfully expressive instrument, cherishing every note and melody. I've always been fortunate to take my love for the music and accordion beyond the performing and into the classroom as a dedicated teacher. My History: I started teaching accordion online way back in 2013. Back then I was building out a school bus to live in, playing musette gigs with my band, and figuring out how to teach great accordion lessons on video chat. How and what I teach has continued to evolve, and this site is the latest evolution. In fact, I just changed the name of my site from RebelReed to the new name, RisingReed. Over these almost 10 years of teaching online I have been part of the continual change and growth in tools and methods for teaching music online. For the first 6 years or so I only taught online one on one lessons. In 2015, I started teaching supplemental Zoom group classes on Music Theory and Musicianship, and those were a huge success. One class expanded out to 4 levels of theory and musicianship, and I subsequently added more topics, like Creativity, a course all on the Bellows, Jazz skills and Beginners classes. Community Learning: This newest iteration of my teaching platform is founded on the popular idea in online education that what is essential these days is to bring the online community together to share, support and learn together. This journey has taken me about half a year, but I finally have my next iteration which is all based around a wonderful community platform, where I can put my info, documents, resources, notes, courses, sheet music, all of that, online and have it available immediately to the accordion community. This has been our Philosophy for 30 years - and we’re proud of it: Staggering Variety, Overflowing Ideas, Developed Ideas, Ideas in process, Success, Failure, Encouragement, by Curator Dr William Schimmel.Styles, Brands, Blah, Blah Blah, Blah - - - ! And all of the ISMS around - yes, even (would you believe) outdated Minimalism (ironic statement of course). We’ve build a culture. We’ve built a community. Some call it a non culture - some call it a non community. Some call us Weird - Some say it’s all been said and done. We do still do weird - and we do new takes on old stuff ( most of them new to the Music Community - Non Accordionists at large - therefore new to them ), which still raises the question: “What is this thing called “New Music ?” There are a few points to ponder: The great director Peter Brook talked greatly about “The Empty Space”. Accordionists start with a “Full Space” and add more and more s - - t. Great artists start practicing slowly until they are ready to play at tempo. Great Accordionists start faster and eventually slow down due to tangled fingers. We think they all lead to the same place. We’re not a Fringe Group. We never were. We put on our lab coats and get to work and so can you - virtually. Topics will include: The Art of Audience Participation/The Sing - a - Long; Embracing the Maximallst Dimension (The Art of Clutter); Faking/Improvising - are they the same?; Working In the Video Dimension; The Varieties of The Mexican Hat Dance and The Hokey Pokey; Classical or Classic; Cassettes are back - giving “Ye Olde Accordion Sound” a return. | There is an excellent opportunity to join the 2024 visit to Castelfidardo from 1st- 5th October. It is an opportunity for those who always wanted to visit ‘Accordion Mecca’. The trip is organized by Peter Le Geyt. Prices for the 5 day package without flights starts at £695 (approx. US$840 & CAD1140) for twin/double occupancy. Supplement for single use of double room will apply. Flights from Heathrow to Bologna are currently showing prices between £90 - £120 (approx. US$110-145 & CAD 149-199). On the journey back to Bologna we will visit the independent state of San Marino for around 4 hours over the lunch period before traveling on to Bologna airport.
